Does it matter how well someone treated their slaves?

When the subject is humans, everyone understands; but apply the same concept to other species and most people don’t get it. There was a time in america when people “owned” other human beings, and this seemed perfectly normal and natural to those people at the time—just as eating animal flesh and wearing leather etc seems normal to the majority today. Does it matter how well someone treated their slaves? Or isn’t the point rather that they HAD slaves at all? Slavery is wrong, and the fact that they are a different species does not make it ok.
